Building the Electric Rascal - Photo Essay

This is where it all begins, with the strongback.


The stem is built up first.


The frames are aligned on the strongback and checked 100 times.


The mahogany keel stands out nicely against the sitka spruce frames.


A new, hollow and light weight transom.


The sitka spruce stringers are very light and very strong.


This is the basic framework of the bottom, ready for double planking.


The first layer of planking is put on diagonally. Then the second layer is layed lengthwise.


Where the rubber meets the road - a very tight bend on the top plank near the transom.


Fairing, filling and sanding. Then some sanding, filling and fairing.


And some more filling, fairing and sanding. It takes a practiced eye to do this well. Jon has the touch.
